What's PVD Coating?

Physical Vapor Deposition PVD coating refers to a variety of environmental friendly vacuum deposition processes for producing metal-based hard coatings by means of generation of partially ionized metal vapor, its reaction with certain gases and by forming a thin film with a specified composition on the on substrates including metals, ceramics, glass, and polymers.
PVD is characterized by a process in which the material transitions from a condensed phase to a vapor phase most commonly used methods are sputtering and cathodic arc. In sputtering, the vapor is formed by a metal target being bombarded with energetic gas ions. Cathodic arc method uses repetitive vacuum arc discharges to strike the metal target and to evaporate the material. After the vapor phase, the material then back to a thin film condensed phase be a coating.

Titanium Nitride (TiN) is FDA approved, extremely hard, inert, thin film coating made of Titanium and Nitrogen in gold color. TiN coating is suitable for many tooling and forming applications by adding hardness and lubricity . TiN coatings are smooth and combine high density with exceptional adhesion giving outstanding performance.

TiCN Coating

Titanium Carbo-Nitride (TiCN) is medium gray in color, It is a hard dense, adherent wear resistant coating. TiCN is recommended for cutting, punching, and wear applications where moderate temperatures will be generated. TiCN Coating has up to 750 Degree F thermal improved wear resistance to abrasive.

TiAlN Coating

Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) is violet in color. It is a hard coating with thermal and oxidation resistance. Ideal coating for high speed and high temperature cutting applications. For turning, TiAlN provide superior edge strength and wear properties, TiAlN coated inserts can run up to 100% faster than uncoated grades and up to 40% faster than PVD TiN coated grades. For milling applications, TiAlN coated inserts can machine up to 50% higher speed than uncoated grades.

AlTiN Coating

Aluminum Titanium Nitride (AlTiN) has the highest temperature resistance of any of the coatings available, It also provides a high degree of surface hardness and maintains that hardness at elevated temperatures. It is the coating of choice when you are dry machining, machining titanium alloys, inconel, stainless alloys and cast iron. The advantage of the AlTiN film is its ability to produce the Al203 when high temperatures are encountered.
